Kevin Austin

Kevin Austin's impactful 15-year journey in health and safety is a testament to his belief in purpose-driven work. His philosophy resonates with the idea of being at the right place at the right time. He shares that “My mother, who worked as a nurse, truly showcased how rewarding it can be to find a sense of purpose in your career. Her dedication to her work inspired me to pursue a path in the field of safety—a sector that holds significant meaning and importance.”

In 2007, Kevin’s career took flight with Shell Canada, where he was contracted as a Senior Safety Technician. His responsibilities included monitoring the safety performance of operations ensuring conformance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

His journey continued when he accepted a role with Suncor, where he initially supported the upstream drilling and completions team. Kevin’s potential was swiftly recognized, leading him to spearhead the implementation of process safety management. Remarkably, in less than a year, his role expanded to project managing the operational excellence management system for Oil Sands & In Situ.

Subsequent chapters in Kevin’s career saw him embracing the role of Director of Health Safety Environment and Quality at Compass Group Canada. Here, he oversaw Shell Canada's Canadian real estate assets. Later, he fortified his experience with pivotal roles in health and safety management at thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions and Horizon North Manufacturing.

At present, Kevin is a HSE & Quality Assurance Officer at KUFPEC, a Kuwait Petroleum Corporation subsidiary, where he is responsible for the implementation of ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001, including greenhouse gas emissions and environmental, social, and governance oversight.

Kevin ardently advocates for the vital role played by the CSSE in his professional life. He emphasizes the intrinsic responsibility professionals have toward contributing to their field. “Every professional bears the responsibility to contribute, be it through attending events, aiding in organizing activities, or spearheading professional development sessions,” he asserts.

From the onset of his career, Kevin has been a dedicated CSSE member and an active volunteer. Currently, as the Acting Chair of the Calgary Community, he supports a team of enthusiastic volunteers, orchestrates events, represents the community, and ensures alignment with the CSSE's mission and objectives. “This role has brought me immense satisfaction by providing me the opportunity to give back and make a meaningful local impact within the profession,” he acknowledges.

Kevin is enthusiastic about the ongoing transformations within CSSE. He sees this phase as a pivotal moment, marking the evolution of the organization. He encourages active participation and urges members to seize this opportunity to influence the organization’s future trajectory. “Now is the time for members to step up, share their ideas, and actively engage in shaping the future of the CSSE,” he notes.
