Outstanding Service Award Winner (Chapter Level), 2022: Gary Gibson, Durham East
Passionate volunteers like Gary Gibson, the winner of the 2022 Outstanding Service Award (Chapter Level), play an important role in the success of CSSE. The award recognizes a member who has demonstrated their commitment to volunteering at the chapter level.
Gary Gibson has been the Durham East Chapter’s Vice Chair for three years and its Membership Director for two years. Currently, he is the chapter’s Programs Director. He is also a Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) interviewer for new applicants seeking their CRSP designation.
Gary co-founded the Durham East Chapter in 2015 as a way to support local members and advance the health and safety profession. He has also been instrumental, over the years, in the chapter’s outreach program to students in Fleming College’s Occupational Health and Safety Program at Frost Campus in Lindsay, Ontario. Over the years, Gary has recruited a large number of new members to the CSSE chapter through his connection to the college and in his BCRSP interviewer role.
A consistently active member of the Durham East Chapter, Gary attends all chapter meetings, is the first to volunteer and always comes up with new ideas to enhance the chapter experience for its members. Over the past few years, he has organized a number of off-site chapter meetings at companies that use innovative safety ideas. Some of these facilities have included a tour of an Ontario Power Generation nuclear reactor training facility, a confined-space rescue simulator at the Region of Durham, and heavy equipment and driving simulators at Fleming College.
