The Senior Safety Officer administers and enforces the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Safety Act and related regulations and fosters the mission, vision, and values of the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).
As a part of the Prevention Services Division, this position reports to the Supervisor, Industrial Safety NT. The Senior Safety Officer administers and enforces the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Safety Act and General Safety Regulations and fosters the mission, vision, and values of the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).
This position also provides analysis of policy issues and acts as a subject matter expert in areas related to prevention. The Senior Safety Officer may represent the WSCC on various National Standards setting agencies, industry associations, and stakeholder panels. The incumbent conducts inspections and engages with employers to ensure compliance with all legislative requirements; the incumbent also performs investigations into incidents of a serious nature, and prepares evidence-based files for prosecution of violators.
We are looking for a safety professional with diplomacy and negation skills and knowledge of Safety Acts and Regulations, industry standards and other related acts, codes and regulations as well as investigative principles and procedures. Frequent duty travel is required in this position.
This position requires a related two year post-secondary diploma and the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, combined with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience working in an industrial safety field. Experience in Dangerous Occurrence investigations and Workplace Accidents Causing Bodily Harm investigation is also required. The incumbent is also required to hold a valid class 5 Driver’s License. We consider equivalent combinations of education and experience on a case-by-case basis.
The salary ranges from $49.02 to $58.53 hourly (approx. $95,589 to $114,133.50 annually), plus a Northern Allowance of $1.77 hourly ($3,450 annually).
