Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of duties specifically related to Health and Safety and the development, administration and implementation of projects independently or under the supervision and direction of the Regional Health and Safety Manager Ontario, and/or the Health and Safety Lead for the business unit;

  • Responsible for completing assigned health and safety and project related assignments, tasks and/or any other special assignments;

  • Responsible for ensuring that the Transportation business unit in Ontario is on target to achieve milestones for achieving COR implementation;

  • Assist with implementing new health and safety changes as a result of new instructions from regulatory bodies, as well as any changes related to health and safety through knowledge of industry best practices;

  • Provide presentations when necessary to senior project managers and field personnel on health and safety topics as needed and as related to the transportation industry;

  • Communicate and work effectively with a diverse cross section of clients in the transportation industry;

  • Attend regional safety committee meetings as well as business unit specific meetings and check-in with staff regularly on safe work practices;

  • Undertake regular ‘toolbox’ training sessions for the transportation business unit, focusing on relevant issues in the office and at project sites throughout Ontario;

  • Visit project sites on a regular basis; monitor for compliance with the WSP policies, Ontario/Federal regulations and document compliance;

  • Investigate and report on incidents, complaints and other situations as may arise;

  • Review job site safety compliance inspections including: hazard analysis, root cause analysis, safe work procedures, write reports and recommendations;

  • Follow up on incidents, and develop systemic responses;

  • Provide leadership and motivate all employees for strong injury management and timely reporting;

  • Ability to provide reports, guidelines, assessments, and other documents that are clear, concise and complete;

  • Ability to resolve complex technical issues with other disciplines;



  • Degree, diploma or certificate program from a post-secondary and accredited institution in environment, health and safety.

  • A professional designation such as (CRSP, CHSO or CHSC) would be an asset;

  • Minimum of five to seven years of health and safety experience;

  • Experience in the transportation industry considered an asset;

  • Knowledge of the Ontario Workplace Safety, the OH&S Act, regulations and industry best practices;

  • Knowledge of Transport Canada regulations including FTA and FRA, as well as MTO regulations considered an asset;

  • Previous experience with construction project safety, project management, quality management, fire and life safety considered desirable;

  • Previous experience with transportation system operations and maintenance and rail and transit construction project safety specifically considered an asset;

  • An understanding of transit in terms of bus, rail, LRT operations and technical requirements considered an asset;

  • Self-motivated team player, enthusiastic about health and safety and has ambition to grow professionally

  • Excellent communication skills in English (Written and verbal);

  • Proficient computer skills and thorough understanding of Microsoft office suite;

  • An understanding of transit in terms of bus, rail, LRT operations and technical requirements;

  • Local candidates preferred.
