This month's topic: "Driven to Distraction"

Presenter: Dave Wallace, Transportation Health & Safety Association

Failing to pay attention when driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes. Carelessness or inattention even for a second or two can lead to serious and even fatal consequences. Hardly a day goes by without talk or news coverage about crashes caused by drivers talking on cell phones, eating, reading, arguing with passengers, or a host of other activities.

Where are we headed? Imagine our roads full of cars driven by people using cell phones, navigation systems, replying to e-mails, pagers, faxes and even surfing the net. The Deputy Administrator of the NHTSA in the US had this to say:

  • "Driving distraction in all its forms is a real threat to safety on our roads. This threat is growing and growing fast. We’ve become so busy in our hectic lives that maximizing every hour has become nearly an obsession. Spending 30 minutes just driving to work for many has become intolerable. So we multi-task to catch up. We need to realize that driving is a complex psycho motor skill. Our full concentration on the driving task is absolutely paramount to survival on our roadways."
As safety professionals, what can we do? Dave will help us develop strategies to identify, assess and control the driving distractions we and our coworkers face everyday.

Please plan to attend this session to share in these discussions, find out more about the CSSE and meet other health and safety professionals.

Please RSVP to David Lindeman at 905-546-2424 ext 5657or dlindema@hamilton.ca
