Position Summary

A visionary leader with a track record of exceptional execution, the Director, Health, Safety & Environment will engage EPCOR’s board, leadership, employees and external stakeholders in a well planned, well communicated and results focused transition toward industry leading safety practices and environmental stewardship.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this individual will lead the organization in developing an infrastructure and culture that supports a true zero injury and illness environment. This highly visible position will be supported by a team of Senior Managers with respective staff and will bring with them a well developed external network in the Health & Safety industry.

The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing input into HSE planning and direction across EPCOR, ensuring alignment of Corporate programs with activities in the business units

  • Within a time span of 2 - 5 years, business planning, management and review including: Setting of vision/mission/values; Strategic positioning; Operational planning and budgeting; Resource planning

  • Understanding the current organizational health and safety climate, and proactively consulting with business units throughout the company to inspire engagement, and to prioritize, develop and implement a framework with the right balance of direction and flexibility

  • Passionately leading, developing, stretching and providing appropriate direction/resources to direct reports; leading indirect reports, peers and other members of the organization by example

  • Managing an appropriate organization design

  • Keeping abreast of current environment, safety, and technical training management practices, trends, and technologies by continuing to build and maintain industry working relationships, and participating in exchange groups, associations, and committees

  • Managing and ensuring the mitigation of safety, environment and technical training risks by managing the development, implementation and review of appropriate control mechanisms

  • Developing and nurturing a high performance, highly disciplined, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented organization that is easy to do business with


Given the leading role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company, this individual must possess the following:


  • post secondary degree in a relevant field

  • A relevant accreditation (i.e. CRSP , CSP)

  • Extensive knowledge of health, safety and environment industry practices, monitoring/control, and relevant legislation in North America

  • Strong understanding of the challenges and best practices for implementing safety, environmental and training initiatives

Technical Skills

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a combination of the health, safety, environment, and training fields, inclusive of corporate head office, field operations, and construction projects across interprovincial boundaries

  • A minimum of 5 years in a leadership position, inclusive of experience with strategic planning and budgeting

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to influence and to deliver concise and clear reports to leadership and the board

  • A natural leader, with the ability to hire, retain, develop and manage people to achieve consistently excellent results
