Our Environmental Services Group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. We provide integrated, multidisciplinary services to identify and assess liabilities and risks, and to develop solutions to site management, remediation, and mitigation. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in marine biology, wetland science, wildlife biology, soil science, fisheries biology, botany, hydrogeology, hydrology, water resources management, forestry, habitat and ecosystem restoration, permitting, GIS, information management, environmental monitoring, in-situ/ex-situ remedial design and implementation, human health and ecological risk assessments, air quality permitting and reporting, pipeline compliance, stormwater permitting and planning, and audit support services. We help our clients to identify and respond to opportunities and threats within constantly changing regulatory and corporate environments, through active engagement with Aboriginal communities, the public, stakeholder groups, and governmental regulators. Our team members have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects that may include environmental assessment and permitting, land reclamation, ecological land classification and mapping, and water resources management.
We have an immediate need in our Markham, ON office for a Health & Safety Compliance /Management Specialist. In this role you will support the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) team’s strategy by participating in projects aimed at ensuring Stantec’s client’s operations meet EHS regulatory requirements and have effective management systems to help organizations achieve their EHS and economic objectives. The individual will support Stantec’s clients in becoming leaders in EHS management.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Performing health and safety compliance and management systems audits (OHSAS 18001, CSA Z1000, etc.)
- Participating in the development of management systems, including developing procedures, developing and delivering EHS training programs;
- Assisting in the development of EHS compliance programs;
- Conducting risk assessments, job hazard analysis and hazardous substance assessments
- Interacting with clients and regulators to meet task and budget requirements.
- Preparing technical reports, including documentation of audits and field investigations, data management and interpretation, and development of graphical and tabular presentation of data.
You will gain increasing responsibility for project and proposal management through training and will work closely with and support senior EHS practitioners and project managers. This position requires travel to and work at client sites for information gathering and client meetings.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or similar scientific discipline;
- 5 plus years of experience in the health and safety field;
- Hold a CHSC, CRSP or other health and safety designation;
- Certification (or qualified to certify) as an occupational health and safety auditor with RABQSA, IRCA, or other certifying body;
- Formal training in, and experience conducting compliance and management system audits;
- Experience in both in consulting and on the client side implementing management systems;
- A strong knowledge of, and experience with occupational health and safety regulations in a variety of jurisdictions in Canada, safety theory and practice;
- A solid understanding of operations safety, OHSAS 18001 or Z1000 standard, management systems, workers compensation, risk assessment and management;
- Experience with safety metrics, trend, analysis, and interpretation to focus safety efforts;
- Solid analytical, project management, interpersonal and communications skills along with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation;
- Strong report and procedure writing skills, ability to work to tight deadlines and able to work as a team and individually;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and web-based applications.
