Measurement of Safety Performance
Dan Petersen

In the latest book from one of America's leading consultants on safety management and organizational behavior, Dan Petersen, Measurement of Safety Performance looks at the types of safety measurements currently used by companies and shows why they are inadequate for a realistic assessment of safety performance. Instead of “measuring failures” by using OSHA incident rates and accident statistics and worker's compensation claims, which only measure incidents, Petersen argues that the best way to measure a company's safety performance at all levels of the company is to use different types of tools, such as perception surveys and scored assessments like audits, to get a true measure of safety. Measures should exist for different levels of the company, from employees, first-line management, middle management, to upper management. He also suggests that getting employees involved in the safety process is key to making safety measures not just statistics in a company spreadsheet.

"The activity based performance measures will build employee involvement and the result based performance measures will engage executive management." – Greg Rindal, CIH, CSP

Safety Supervision, Second Edition

Too often, supervisory safety performance suffers for a variety of reasons, many attributable to middle and upper management. In Safety Supervision, Second Edition, Dan Petersen provides assessment techniques and supervisory and management guidelines developed in years of practice as a top industry safety management consultant. This book will both broaden the supervisor’s safety skill set and provide practical, result-oriented and measurable improvement in such crucial supervisory activities as investigating for cause and inspecting for hazards. The author goes to the next level by explaining how proven coaching and motivational techniques, applied to supervisory safety practices, combine to produce a "safety culture" at all levels of the work force.

How Smart Managers Create World-Class Safety, Health, and Environmental Programs
Charlotte A. Garner, CSP

According to OSHA, the average VPP worksite has reported LDIR and/or job transfers at least 50% below the industry average. This book explains how to implement the VPP guidelines--even if your company decides not to participate in the VPP Program--and what to expect in terms of cost savings and reduced risk of injuries. The author has worked with many companies who have achieved and maintained VPP status. The tools for change Ms. Garner discusses were developed over the past twenty years working with both corporations and government agencies such as the Johnson Space Center. She provides SH&E managers with the set of principles based on OSHA VPP criteria, the tools to analyze program deficiencies, and proven consensus-building techniques that will result in effective implementation.

"This book takes the reader on a step-by-step journey toward safety, health and environmental excellence by paralleling OSHA's elite Voluntary Protection Programs. This book is directed to those innovative managers who aren't afraid to become a change agent within their own organizations." --Frank H. Perry, P.E., CSP

"I strongly recommend this book to SHE managers who are trying to make a, 'step function,' improvement in their programs. It will allow you to benchmark where you are using a gap analysis, where you want to be, and how to strategically plan how to get there." --Mark D. Hansen, PE, CSP, CPEA, CPE

The Participation Factor- How to Increase Involvement in Occupational Safety
E. Scott Geller, Ph.D.

Dr. Scott Geller wrote this book based on the belief that too many safety articles and books approach the human or psychology side of safety from the "common sense" perspective-which research shows is often biased and leads to the wrong results. What safety slogans are more appropriate? What kinds of incentive/reward programs could increase participation? And what safety performance metrics should we use to increase positive stress rather than negative stress (or distress), and thereby encourage empowerment and involvement? In answering these questions, Dr. Geller debunks many of the myths behind the "common sense" approach to improving participation. Included is a new Social Influence Survey (SIS) designed to teach the social dynamics of safety.

Contents include:

  • The Psychology of Non-Participation
  • The Benefits of Self-Persuasion
  • The Need for Competence
  • The Support of Social Dynamics
