The Essentials of Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental Law in Canada

CSSE, in partnership with Gowlings, is pleased to offer a full day course that covers everything that a health and safety professional needs to know about occupational health, safety and environmental law in Canada.

About the Course

This one-day course will provide participants with the basic knowledge, skills and perceptions necessary to knowledgeably explain and demonstrate the importance of safety, health and environmental laws and regulations in Canada. In particular, the participant will be able to discern the relationship between provincial and the federal occupational health and safety and environmental laws and regulations and describe their enforcement in the different jurisdictions.

Attend this Seminar to:

  • Describe and explain the environmental law overlap between federal and provincial jurisdictions
  • Judge the role of politics and media in the development of SHE law
  • Discern the relationship between Bill C-45 and OHS laws in Canada
  • Determine the rights of workers to refuse unsafe work
  • Define the role of the OHS regulator in enforcing OHS law in Canada
  • Appraise the right to appeal OHS regulators’ orders and directions
  • Explain the authority and role of government in setting and enforcing environmental laws
  • Identify the regulation of air and water pollution in Canada
  • Describe environmental orders and the right to appeal them
  • Appraise the legal character of SHE offences and differentiate between offences and criminal offences
  • Discuss proof of SHE offences in the courts
  • Evaluate the legal defense of due diligence
  • Explore the future of SHEA law in Canada
  • Participate in interactive sessions with other Health and Safety Professionals and leave the course with a network of problem-solving colleagues
  • Come away with a binder of prepared notes and additional resources
  • Receive a CSSE certificate of participation in professional development

Who Should Attend this Course:

This Course has been designed to be of particular interest to anyone who is responsible for the interpretation of SHEA law as it pertains to their company’s operations. It will also be of interest to a wide audience base—anyone who has a legal duty for workplace health and safety activities including directors to line supervisors to joint workplace safety and health committee members.
