Target Audience: Ergonomists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Disability Management Professionals

  • This is an intermediate-advanced level workshop
  • Attendees should have some ergonomics education, experience, and some basic human anatomy knowledge

Workshop Description:

This workshop will address and allow attendees to describe shoulder function basics, occupational shoulder exposures and risks, and mechanisms of occupational shoulder musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

The session will also discuss case examples with an open question/answer session pertaining to application of the knowledge to real world settings (including manufacturing/manual materials handling, office, utilities, municipal services, and return to work).

Workshop Program

Morning:

Shoulder function basics –

  • Shoulder regional functional anatomy
  • Tradeoffs of stability and flexibility
  • Contributors to shoulder stability and their interaction with healthy function
  • Major tissue types and their characteristics

Occupational shoulder exposures –

  • Generic exposure types – including overhead work
  • The spatial dependency of muscular demands and its importance in work design
  • Determinants of shoulder muscular fatigue
  • Hand tool use and hand force generation and their consequences
  • Practitioner tools to estimate exposures and guidelines for work design/assessment

Afternoon:

Mechanisms of Occupational Shoulder MSDs –

  • Tendinitis development
  • Tissue damage progression – Rotator Cuff focus
  • Kinematic adaptations and their consequences
  • Risk modifiers including age, fitness, comorbidities, industrial sector

Case examples and open question/answer session
